Large diameter pipes are steel or other material pipes with very wide outside diameters, typically above about 350 500mm (14 20inches) and up to several metres, designed to carry large volumes of fluid, gas, or material over long distances in major infrastructure and industrial systems. These pipes include LSAW (longitudinal submerged arc welded), SSAW (spiral welded), ERW (high frequency welded), and even seamless varieties when applicable, and are engineered for high strength, pressure resistance, flow capacity, and durability in demanding environments such as oil & gas transmission networks, water supply and sewage trunk mains, chemical transport pipelines, and large structural or foundation applications. Due to their size and load bearing capability, large diameter pipes are essential in projects such as long distance pipeline networks, municipal and industrial water systems, buried and above ground infrastructure, bridge and marine construction, and even pile foundation casings in heavy civil works. Their manufacturing and material standards ensure uniform dimensions, consistent mechanical properties, and often include protective coatings (e.g., epoxy, 3PE, or polyethylene) to enhance corrosion resistance and service life under harsh soil and environmental conditions. In many engineering practices, the classification of "large diameter starts around 16 to 20inches OD (approximately 406mm 508mm), but in advanced projects, some pipes can be as large as 2,500mm (100inches) or more to meet specific flow and structural requirements.
